University Committee on Discipline (UCD) & Appeal Board Student Member Information
General Information:
When any registered student of Ferris Sate University is allegedly involved in an incident which violates any policy in the Code of Community Standards, that student is referred to their Hall Director and/or the Department of Public Safety. The Hall Director is trained to fill the role of a hearing officer and will meet with the accused student to resolve the case. There may be times when the case is referred to the Office of Student Conduct. For those violations that are of a serious nature like sexual assault, physical assault or those cases involving suspension or dismissal, a student may be referred to a University Committee on Discipline (UCD) rather than a meeting with an individual hearing officer. The UCD is a panel made up of one faculty member, one staff member and one student member.
Additionally, Appeal Boards are formed to review a student's written appeal when the outcome was suspension or dismissal. The Appeal Board is a panel made up of one faculty member, one staff member, and one student member. Appeal Board members would not serve for the same accused student (i.e. the member was part of a UCD hearing for the student).
Principle Responsibilities of a Student Member:
- Serve on a University Committee on Discipline to determine violations of University policies and appropriate sanctions. And/or to serve on an Appeal Board to review the written appeal.
- Be familiar with the Code of Student Community Standards (Student Handbook) policies regarding misconduct.
- Understand the role of educational sanctioning in the disciplinary process.
